以前から，多くの治療薬が頭痛に対する頓挫効果を期待され，経験的に用いられてきた．作用機序がいまだ明らかでないものも多いが，一方で新たな薬剤の治療効果が明らかとなることにより，さらなる病態解明へつながる可能性も否定できない．
少数例での治療的経験から，新たな EBM の確立が期待されうる領域である.

プロクロルペラジンは，静注 ^{1) 5）} ，筋注 ^2） ，坐薬 ^3） ，合剤 ^4） など複数の剤型で片頭痛に対する頓挫効果が証明されている（グレード A ）． クロルプロマジンの静注 ^6） に関しても，有用性が認められている（グレード A ）．副腎皮質ステロイド（デキサメサゾン）静注 ^7） （グレード　 B ）やマグネシウム静注 ^8） （グレード C ），リドカイン経鼻 ^9） （グレード C ）に関しては報告が少なく，また，質の高い臨床試験が実施されておらず，現時点ではすすめられない．
いずれの治療法も本邦においてはすべて保険適用外であるため，急性期治療の第一選択とはなりにくい ．
