片頭痛の急性期の特異的な治療薬として，選択的なセロトニン作動性薬剤であるトリプタン類の薬剤が開発されてきた．この効果に関する科学的なエビデンスを明らかにする ．

現在，本邦で使用可能なトリプタン系薬剤としては，スマトリプタン，ゾルミトリプタン，エレトリプタン，リザトリプタンの 4 種がある（ 2004 年 11 月）． 本邦でも ， それぞれの薬剤に対する RCT があり ， その有効性は明らかである ． また ， ブリッジングスタディによっても欧米と概ね同様な結果が得られており ， 欧米の検討の結果は本邦の頭痛診療に適用が可能と考えられる ． 既に効果については ， 各々の薬剤の効果に関するメタアナリシスも行われており ， また Cochrane の review が出ている ， スマトリプタン ， エレトリプタン ， リザトリプタンについては特にエビデンスとして質が高いと考えられる ．
